Dear Friend,

If you’d like to improve your voice to be able to sing on the worship team, hit higher notes than you ever thought, feel more confident singing in front of others, or even pursue a career as a singer, this may just be the most important message you will read...

Hi, my name is Nate Brown.

A few years ago, I was at a crossroads… would I spend the next few years pursuing a career as a singer or as an instrumentalist.

I decided to pursue singing. But, I had a lot of doubts. First, I didn’t consider myself a “singer” at all. I didn’t know if I would end up hitting a brick wall in terms of progress and potential. I simply didn’t know if I even had what it took.

I went for it, nonetheless. I began studying voice and taking weekly lessons from an accomplished classical singer who had been teaching for over 50 years.

He taught me fundamental vocal technique. Things began to make sense. It wasn’t easy, but I was seeing progress. To my surprise, I kept improving… and never seemed to hit any “brick wall”. The more I put into it, the more I got out.

I began to really understand my voice and grasp how to use it as an instrument. Eventually, I auditioned for some professional groups in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, and before long I was singing professionally in venues such as Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. This is an abbreviated version of the story, for sure. But you get the idea!

Now, the most rewarding part of this journey for me was that I finally felt I could express myself through my voice. This changed the way I worshiped the Lord through my voice, and how I could lead others in worship as a local worship leader for my church.

And, It all started with the fundamental vocal technique I was taught. That is really what laid the groundwork for everything else.

That is why I am so passionate to share this with you through this vocal course on fundamental vocal technique! Because, I know that if you grasp these rather simple techniques, it can have a profound affect on your singing for the rest of your life.

After taking this course, you will be able to:

  • Control your breath (sing for longer, take deeper, quicker breaths)

  • Extend your range… hit both higher and lower notes than before

  • Sing with a better tone

  • Have better resonance

  • Sing louder!

  • Sing for longer without tiring your voice

  • Understand your voice

  • Know how to apply all of this to specific songs

You may already be singing on the worship team at your church... but never had formal vocal training and feel something like this would be beneficial.

Or maybe you love to sing, but just know you have room for improvement, and would like to take the next step to develop your God-given instrument.

Maybe you’re like I was, you don’t think of yourself as a “singer”, but you want to use your voice for God’s glory and want to pursue vocal training to see where that may lead.

I know if you’re reading this, you see the value in vocal training. I’m sure you resonate with Psalm 33:3 in much the same way I do, which says, “Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.” I hope you’re as excited as I am to work on our craft for God’s glory.

So, let me show you exactly what you can expect from this course.

Testimonial from Jon

“I was able to pour myself into the lesson material and it ultimately just transformed my relationship with my voice and with singing. It provided a foundation that allowed me to build confidence in a natural way with my voice like I had done with stringed musical instruments my entire life. Since then I’ve been able to lead worship in church and worship nights with friends. It just feels like I can now contribute my voice musically to church or to community in ways I always avoided [before] due to lack of training or “know how”. It transformed not only my ability to hit certain notes and sound “ok”, but more than that it really opened up a whole part of my life that I wasn’t able to explore. So, it’s added a ton to my life and I learned things I’m going to take with me for years.”

Martin's Story

Around 18mo ago, I was asked to lead the music at my church. I thought, “You know, I really ought to be able to sing a little bit”. So I tried some YouTube lessons to get going. The YouTube lessons were ok, although I didn’t know what it was I needed to learn or what order. I came across an online course called Vocal Groundwork, I took a chance with it, and I’m glad I did. I found the stepping stones of progress were so clear. From breath support, resonance, connecting the notes. All those things helped me get the building blocks. I also loved the feedback Nate gave me on my recordings. It was so clear and specific. I find Nate’s style so helpful. He really listens and picks up on lots of little specifics like “the melody line was a fraction out, or the rhythm needs to change a bit.” So, my breathing has improved, my notes have improved, my connecting has improved, my range has improved. I’ve even found it easier now to play guitar and sing at the same time.

Mary Anne's Story

"As I grew in my relationship with the Lord, my love for music—particularly praise and worship—grew. For me, it was like a touch from God, but the problem is I wouldn’t open my mouth. I have zero self confidence. And I tried a couple of online classes… and it just wasn’t right. But, I now have 10 grand babies, and I SO want to nurture the love of praise and worship music and hymns with them. But, again, I won’t even sing in front of them. And then I came upon Nate’s site, and I thought… this is different. I took the plunge and signed up for Vocal Ground work and I’m about 25% of the way through and I’ve already seen a dramatic improvement. I think what I like most of all is that his instruction is clear and concise. He’s extremely responsive, and his feedback was great. And he’s also offered to meet with me online to further assess. And that’s exactly what I needed. I feel that God has called him to do this, and he does it well. I’m just incredibly grateful."

Tenae's story

I signed up for the Vocal Groundwork training, and I’ve been very pleased. I have gained a lot of my confidence back through it, because I have fine tuned my skills. I love his videos and his training. You can reference back to them whenever you want. They are short and simple. And there are a lot of technique and skills to practice. I love working with Nate. He is very kind and passionate about what he does.

FAQ

What if I don’t see any improvement?

Each person is different and each voice is unique… that is true. However, as I tell my students, your voice is both a muscle and an instrument. If you put in the time to practice and “work out” your voice in the correct way, you will see improvement. If you diligently apply the correct technique, you will be able to see the difference.

Do I need to have a certain musical ability to take this course?

I believe that literally everyone has a voice and can improve their voice if they use it the right way. That being said, it is true that each person varies in their natural musical abilities. Due to the nature of this online course and the fact you will need to implement these lessons on your own without much feedback from a “hands on” private instructor...

You will get the most out of this course if you can cary a tune and match the notes you hear in the warm ups. It is definitely possible to learn how to sing better even if you can’t sing on pitch consistently. But in that case, I would recommend private lessons. If you are relatively confident you can cary a tune decently well (and by “decently well” I mean even half decently), you will be FINE!

You don’t need to know any music theory or have any other musical knowledge to take this course and see improvement. If you’d like some example warm ups to sing with, you can find some of the similar ones we’ll be using in this “Vocal Technique Mini-Course”.

Couldn’t I just find all this info on YouTube?

The short answer is, yes. You can probably find most of what I’m covering for free on YouTube. And, I encourage you to listen to other YouTube videos. However, the hardest part about YouTube is that it is impossible to get any sense of progression… what to learn next.

That is where this course is invaluable… it will give you a step-by-step guide on how to exactly progress in the most effective way.

When it comes to vocal technique, each teacher uses slightly different terminology for very similar vocal principle or techniques… this can be very confusing for someone starting out. That is why it can be helpful to stick with one teacher for consistency of terminology and method.

Will I have all it takes to sing on the worship team or perhaps professionally?

In this age of American Idol and The Voice, singing incredibly has almost become a myth… as if singing just “happens” and you can be amazing at it right from the get go. Well, as you probably already know since you’re reading this… singing takes a whole lot of dedication and work. Just like learning how to play the piano takes years of practice, becoming a seasoned singer takes a lot of time.

Also, this course is designed to give the foundations of vocal technique. It will give you a great understanding of your voice and amazing groundwork on which you can continue to grow as a singer. If this sparks your interest in all that can be done with your voice, I would encourage you taking further voice lessons after this course is finished (or even during the course) to be able to get feedback from a voice teacher on which aspects of vocal development you should continue to focus on… and perhaps pursue more advanced technique and stylistic approach to singing! The door is wide open!

How long will it take to finish the course?

This course will take a minimum of 7 weeks to complete. It is designed for each module to be completed over the course of a week minimum. However, in practice, spending at least 2 weeks on each module is advisable in many cases. When it comes to building new habits, it takes time and repetition. That is why I don’t recommend trying to complete this course as quick as possible. If anything, some modules may need more time to truly master and get into your system.

What it’s all about

Finally, my desire with this course is to help my brothers and sisters in Christ learn the skills to be able to enjoy singing for God’s glory. I hope you will be able to more freely express your worship to God through your voice. My prayer is that you would be able to build your confidence and a level of comfort that will allow you to find enjoyment in singing for God’s glory. I truly think there is no better use, or more enjoyable use for singing, than to bring glory to God.
